Level Matching
Louder is better! Actually, no, not always (and I like it loud).
When you process audio in a plugin it will invariably affect the level by increasing or decreasing it. Especially the case with a compressor but even so with an EQ; even if you're just boosting the top, you're still boosting the signal some overall, which results in a higher output.
The louder signal might sound better initially but that will cloud your view as to whether the changes have been beneficial or not.
This is where Level Matching comes in. Adjusting the output post-processing to match the initial input will mean that you're hearing it at the same volume, then, when you bypass the plugin, you can instantly hear if the changes are for the better.
It also helps when feeding into a following plugin as it helps to keep a consistent gain structure, something which is super important in mixing.
