How To Use A Noise Gate

How To Use A Noise Gate

Noise Gates are awesome.

Use them to clean up audio tracks and make more space in your mix.

Here are some basics on what the controls are doing!

THRESHOLD

Sets the level the signal needs to be to open the gate; everything below this will get reduced or cut completely

RANGE/REDUCTION

Sets how much the gate is bringing the signal down by when it's beneath the Threshold

ATTACK

This is how quickly the gate opens once the signal is above the Threshold; set this super fast for drums and slower for less transient instruments, like strings.

HOLD

How long the gate is held open for once the signal is above the Threshold; adjust this depending on the source

RELEASE

How long it takes for the gate to close after it's been held open; either cut it off immediately or allow it to close more slowly - kind of like a fade - and make things a bit more natural-sounding.

LOOKAHEAD

Only available in the digital realm this one, but it allows the gate to essentially 'look ahead; into the future a little so it can what's coming and then react more accurately.
